China Poised for Economic Changes

1. Do you think that China will be able to continue its economic growth given that many Western countries, including powerful ones, are suspicious of China's growth?
2. Will Western countries try to stop China's progress? What might they do?
3. If China does continue its economic growth and start dominating global markets, do you think Communism will spread? Or will China be forced to give up its restrictive laws in order to be able to trade with other powerful countries?

  1. 1. China will have no problem continuing its economic growth, even if western countries start to feel threatened by the presence of China. This is because “China is the largest single trading power, and it is the largest trading partner of more than 120 countries.” China is linked to every powerful western country economically somehow, and if countries started to stop trading with China, that decision would in turn hurt themselves as well.
    2. Western Countries would be foolish to try to stop the progress of China. The international power of China is too great to try to stop in a short amount of time. If Western Countries wanted to try to slow the economic growth of China, they could make taxes on Chinese imported goods higher so they could benefit directly from the heightened taxes as well as production costs going up in China which could slow the Chinese economy.
    3. I believe that communism will not spread and has no chance of dominating the international market. Mostly because as China grows, they slowly are inching closer and closer to capitalism. China “reached the conclusion that state ownership won't work; China is now committed to free markets”. China will continue to dominate a part of the international economy, but it will be compatible to the capitalist economy of the other western countries by that time.

  2. I agree wit Alex. China is too big and too cheap not to continue to grow. And even if western countries are suspicious and try to slow down China's production, they would only be hurting themselves. The article also makes it clear that China is taking extreme measures to make sure there will be no corruption, more eco-friendly rules, and updating their system. To show their plans to succeed, "The market will have a "decisive" role in China's economy by 2020." This is a big step for China, seeing how it is communist and all. Lastly, China may be communist, but it's with a little "c". They still have Mao and in a real Communist society there is no leader and government. Therefore, communism will not be spread.

  3. 1. I disagree with Alex; China will not be able to continue its current economic growth. There are several reasons; one is that China essentially gets its money by producing things for other countries. According to Forbes “China misses four conditions that make economic growth sustainable.” China has no creativity or innovation and this causes the economy in China to slow growth. It is impossible to keep an economy growing at almost ten percent when the economy revolves around production. The production in China will grow to what it is capable of and then stop growing. After the production reaches its peak it will just stay there. There is nothing to keep it growing. To keep the economy growing at such a substantial rate, entrepreneurship and innovation is necessary. China does not have this and growth will not continue at such a drastic rate. 2. I don’t believe that other countries will try to stop China. China is such a leading power in the economy that it would be ridiculous for countries to stop interacting with China. Countries would just be hurting themselves if they decided to try to “stop” China in some way. The only thing that would stop China is China itself. Other countries would certainly not step in, as this would slow the global economy.
    3. Communism will not spread as China continues to grow. If China wants its economy to grow, it will need to adapt to a more capitalist economy. China is already starting to move towards capitalism and this is the only way that China will be able to take over the global markets. Since China will move towards capitalism, its communism will fade away and therefore there will be no way for communism to grow.
